Turban – what is it?

Turban – An age old cultural/religious headwear, worn in myriad of styles, shapes and colors by people in Asia and North Africa, has proved to be an important piece of accessory that has had both practical and spiritual attributes. While in various parts of the worlds, ‘the turban’ still remains what it was hundreds of years ago, but for the fashion forward section of the society today, it has been an haute accessory to adorn, and is spreading more-so most recently.

Origin

The Indian name for turban -‘Pagri’ has been an intrinsic part of its culture in the most parts of India. Sikhs, Gujrati, Haryanvi, Rajasthani, Punjabi, Marathi, and many other Indian origin people wear pagri as a protective gear, symbol of their difference in levels of purity, religiosity, social-status, and to symbolize their belonging to various racial and socioeconomic strata of society. Also worn by Persians, Muslims, Mayans of Central America, Turks, and even by ancient Europeans during the Renaissance period, the turban has always been there in the world, only not as fashion/trend icon.

The Fashion Journey

Although an accessory worn traditionally by men, turban soon became a high-fashion element for women all across the globe. In the international fashion scene, beginning in Europe, Poiret could be credited with the completely new and flamboyant maharaja turban design. In 1907 Paul Poiret was instrumental in setting a trend to conceal hair when he dressed his models in Directoire columnar styles and turbans. By 1910, turbans were all the rage for evening wear and lent an exotic eastern flair which had originated in the oriental fashion movements after the costumes worn by the Ballets Russe, designed and painted by Leon Bakst, who was also their Set Designer.

During the war years, as women took to the factory and to the plough and tractor – hairstyles – by necessity were tied up in scarves or Turbans, cut to shorter lengths or pinned up in the many and various rolls known as Victory Hairstyles .What became known as the Rosie the Riveter look, was daily wear for both Factory girls and the famous Land Girls.

The Turban equalized people of all means and social backgrounds. Starting as a simple safety precaution to prevent hair entangling in machinery at the factory or in the farm, the usual resourcefulness of the female sex quickly turned it into a fashion accessory, in much the same way that Turbans and Headscarves do for women who undergo chemotherapy these days.

Coming with various baggages from numerous parts of society, both the full blown turban and the conservative turband is coming in full force to the fashion scene, which looks like a piece of fashion that is here to stay. With major design labels, namely Prada, H&M, Ralph Lauren, Moschino, and Derek Lam, introducing their own interpretations of the turban, one wonders if it is actually going to the next big trend on the streets.The turban appeared on Prada’s spring/summer 2007 catwalk as part of a multicultural theme, with other eastern and oriental references. Even, Ralph Lauren who is renowned for preppy clothing had produced a version of the turban for that season. The mystical turban has graced the heads of models in years past at Valentino, Donna Karan, Giorgio Armani, etc.
